Harbor Freight Recalling Over 1 Million Jack Stands – STOP USING THEM (Items 56371, 61196, 61197)

Harbor Freight recently recalled over 1 million 3 and 6 ton jack stands due to the fact that… they can unexpectedly drop a car on you! The recalls actually started on March 13th and April 24th. Not sure why its just making the round now but check the item numbers on your jack stands! If yours match any of the numbers listed in the title RETURN THEM to the store and they will give you a gift card. Below I will include text from and links to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which put out reports on both the 3 and 6 ton jack stands. (The below information is specifically for the 3 ton but the link for the 6 ton is below as well.)

Manufacturer Name : Harbor Freight Tools
Submission Date : MAY 03, 2020
NHTSA Recall No. : 20E-027
Manufacturer Recall No. : TBD
Manufacturer Information :
Manufacturer Name : Harbor Freight Tools
Number of potentially involved : 1,254,000

Brand / Trade 1 : Pittsburgh Automotive
Model : 3 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands
Part No. : 56371
Size : 3 Ton
Function : Jack Stand
Descriptive Information : After ongoing quality testing, inspection and assurance reviews of 3 Ton Heavy
Duty Steel Jack Stands manufactured by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Co., Ltd
(exported by Shanghai Shen Da Import and Export Co Ltd.), it was determined
that product quality was inconsistent due to aging of the tooling and inconsistent
location indexing of the pawl armature hole. All jack stands imported from this
manufacturer as part number 61196 and 56371 are included in the recall
population. Although we believe this issue arose in more recent production
batches, because we are not able confirm that earlier production units do not
have this issue, out of an abundance of caution we are recalling all units prior to
the recall date.
Harbor Freight Tools sells 3 ton jack stands under the same brand but with
different item numbers which are made by other manufacturers, and we
evaluated those other jack stands, finding no faults. Moreover, we have reviewed
the history of any customer incidents for the jack stands produced by the other
manufacturers and found that there have not been any other claims exhibiting
the defect.
Production Dates : JAN 01, 2020 – MAR 31, 2020

Brand / Trade 2 : Pittsburgh Automotive
Model : 3 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands
Part No. : 61196
Size : 3 Ton
Function : Jack Stand
Descriptive Information : After ongoing quality testing, inspection and assurance reviews of 3 Ton Heavy
Duty Steel Jack Stands manufactured by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Co., Ltd
(exported by Shanghai Shen Da Import and Export Co Ltd.), it was determined

Production Dates : DEC 01, 2012 – DEC 31, 2019

Description of the Defect : For certain units, the ratchet teeth on the jack stand lifting extension post may inconsistently engage the pawl to a sufficient depth.

Description of the Safety Risk : Under load, with a potential shift in weight, on certain units the jack stand pawl may disengage from the extension lifting post, allowing the stand to drop suddenly, with potential to injure people near or under a lifted vehicle. Description of the Cause : The manufacturing process that controls the location indexing of the pawl armature hole was inconsistent due to aging of production tooling. This caused inconsistency in the engagement of the ratchet teeth in certain units.
Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : On certain units, when a potential shift in weight occurs, an incident affecting
safety may happen without any warning.

Chronology :
Ongoing quality testing on the jack stands as manufactured, as well as analysis of customer feedback, Quality
Assurance review of product returned to Distribution Centers, and review of online social media content raised
a potential safety issue on 6 ton jack stands produced by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Co., Ltd on January 21, 2020
HFT initiated an investigation to conduct additional internal quality maintenance testing on each of its SKUs of
jack stands. The test results indicated that, along with certain 6 ton jack stands, certain units of the 3 Ton Heavy
Duty Steel Jack Stands manufactured by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Co., Ltd (exported by Shanghai Shen Da
Import and Export Co Ltd.) (SKU 61196 and SKU 56371) did not meet the test requirements for assured safety.
On April 24, 2020 Harbor Freight Tools decided to conduct a recall to address this issue with certain units of 3
ton jack stands manufactured by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Co., Ltd.

Description of Remedy Program : Harbor Freight Tools will provide a gift card equal to the shelf price of
these jack stands to all customers who have purchased them.
How Remedy Component Differs
from Recalled Component :
All 3 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands, model 61196 and 56371,
manufactured by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Co., Ltd have a label identifying
the item by these SKU numbers, and have already been removed from
inventory.
Identify How/When Recall Condition
was Corrected in Production :
The recall condition was identified after production of the jack stands was
discontinued.

When I went out to buy jack stands, I looked for a “top quality” brand, but all I found were the identical stands that HF sold, just painted different colors, so I went with the HF stands. The two pair I bough were during the recall period. We’ll see if enough of the stickers remain on the stands to indicate which SKU numbers mine are. I remember that beneath all the paint the jack stand lifting arm looked really rough, like it was an old casting, but I figured that the rough edges might also be to help them grip better.

Thanks for posting the recall !

Funny thing, I thought about being “extra” careful by purchasing the 6 ton jacks, but they are just as dangerous.

If you find any of those top quality ones let me know! I know at least some of mine are from Harbor Freight. Going to check the numbers tomorrow but that really just tells me if I can get a gift card for them or not. Not sure I want to use them now even if they aren’t part of the recall.
