I got the MeterK cable tracker (Sorry I wrote it was Tacklife in my original post…so many deals I guy gets mixed up!) Letting you know how it looked. For about a $15 tracker it’s not bad at all.

The main negative is that the plastic it is made of seems a bit thin and hollow, so the tracker probably would not tolerate much of a drop, but what does one expect for $15.

It comes with two 9volt batteries, a case, a couple testing cables, the tone generator, and the signal receiver. The instructions are adequate…a bit rough to read.

As for testing and tracing a cable. I put a couple Cat5 and Cat 6 cables on it, and it tested the 8 pins on each as expected. I traced out a cable on a 100 foot run at the patch panel with the toner in the keystone jack, and I tone out the exact patch port in the closet (was concerned I’d see some bleed over, but didn’t). The cable tracker does have some additional analog phone specific tests, but I don’t do much with analog systems, so those I did not test, nor really have a use for.

I would definitely buy this again. After the promo code it was like $15.60 with tax for me. I have an old Fluke toner, and this unit would not replace the Fluke, nor is it as sturdy. However, as a backup toner, a spare in the office so I don’t have to go to the truck to get the Fluke, or a home DIYer that only traces out some cables from time to time. This MeterK unit would work just fine. Even at the full price (about $24), I’d pay for it, but the sweet Struggleville.net deal just makes it all the better.
