I sell on eBay fairly regularly. By that I mean I typically have stuff up there all of the time and things sometimes sell.
My biggest issue is budget shipping. For the smaller type of packages it is easily USPS. If it is small and heavy I usually use the Priority flat rate padded envelopes if I can. I need to do some research on Priority flat rate regional boxes to see how that works and if it makes sense.
If it is larger/heavier (and won't fit flat rate) I will typically do FedEx smart post.

Way back in 2013 I did a video on regional rate boxes. The concept is still accurate although they have since gotten rid of Regional C boxes. This was actually one of my first videos ever.

I also did a video specifically on shipping clothes however the principles apply to any item. Again its many years old but the concept is still right. First class mail now goes up to 16 ounces.

For USPS things get considerably more expensive to ship when they are physically large and when shipping past region 4. Zones 1-4 are cheap 5-8 (sometimes I see a 9th listed but thats not important) gets expensive. The zones vary depending on your location. The medium flat rate box can be a good value when shipping to zones 5-8 but rarely will be a good deal for you in zones 1-4.
Regional rate boxes have the best potential value if you have a smaller heavy object.
Large items that travel a great distance are usually MUCH cheaper to use Fedex as you mentioned.
