Paranoia from what though???  Guns can kind of be explained under paranoia.

I guess a fear of being under lock down.  They are scared certain every day items won't be available if all stores were closed.

Turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Now they are not available regardless.

I don't know.  You could always use rags, dish towels, etc.

Who said people were smart though. 

This is true.   Sadly the sale of Corona Beer has also dropped sharply this year due to fear of the virus as well.
