Tool News: Take Back Your Garage. A Survey Reveals American Garages are Overrun by Clutter

A recent survey by the iconic CRAFTSMAN brand has uncovered a growing problem in American garages – clutter. The CRAFTSMAN Take Back Your Garage Survey found that over a third (36%) of American garages are so cluttered that they can no longer park a vehicle inside. This is a significant concern, especially considering that more than 60% of Americans with garages feel that their garage is the most cluttered space in their home.

The problem of garage clutter is not just an aesthetic issue. A cluttered garage can lead to a lack of usable space, making it difficult to carry out activities such as DIY projects, automotive maintenance, and even leisure activities like socializing and hosting parties. In fact, the survey found that 53% of U.S. adults use their garage or at-home workshop for DIY projects, with millennials being the most frequent at-home DIYers at 62%.

Despite this, over 90% of Americans with garages believe that a well-organized garage can make a small garage appear larger and 85% see a well-organized and usable garage as a source of pride. However, more than half (52%) are unsatisfied with how their garage is organized. This can be partly attributed to the large number of items stored in the garage, with nearly 80% of respondents reporting power tools and hand tools as the top items in their space, and 76% keeping outdoor tools and equipment inside.

The most commonly used tools in the garage were power drills (56%) and shop vacs (41%).

When it comes to storing outdoor equipment, the survey found that 62% of those with garages keep their leaf blower in their garage, followed by string trimmers (57%), walk-behind lawn mowers (51%), hedge trimmers (49%) and chainsaws (48%).

The CRAFTSMAN Take Back Your Garage Survey highlights the need for better organization in American garages. With over 80 million garages in the U.S, there is a significant opportunity to help Americans take back their garages and create functional spaces that bring pride and productivity to their homes.
